Ohio Driver Licensing After a DUI: Hearings, Reinstatement & SR-22

How the OH driver-licensing agency handles OVI suspensions: hearing deadlines, reinstatement steps, interlock and SR-22 filings.

    The OH licensing action explained

After a OVI arrest in Ohio, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (bmv.ohio.gov) opens its own case against your driving privilege. It is administrative, it moves faster than the criminal case, and it is decided regardless of what the court later does with the charge.

How the OH agency runs the licence case

    • The Administrative Licence Suspension takes effect immediately on a test failure or refusal under R.C. 4511.191.
    • The suspension is appealed in the trial court handling the criminal case under R.C. 4511.197.
    • After the court-ordered suspension, a reinstatement fee is paid to the BMV.
    • First-offense OVI suspensions with no prior in ten years follow the BMV's published first-offense process.
    • Proof of financial responsibility (SR-22) is required for the length of the suspension.

    4. Ohio requires a SR-22 certificate of financial responsibility for 3 years before a licence is reinstated after a OVI conviction.
